How To Reach Hamburg

Hamburg can be reached either by plane, by train or by car.

By Plane

Hamburg has the fifth-largest international airport in Germany called Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (HAM).

By Train

There are five major stations in Hamburg: Hauptbahnhof (central station), Altona, Dammtor, Harburg and Bergedorf.

There are direct connections with Deutsche Bahn (DB) for Copenhagen and Aarhus (Denmark), Budapest (Hungary), Prague (Czech Republic), Vienna (Austria), and Bratislava (Slovakia).
The ICE (Inter City Express) usually has hourly connection to major german cities, as well as Basel and Zürich (Switzerland)

By Car

Hamburg can be reached via various Autobahn :

  • A1 to/from Lübeck
  • A1 to/from Bremen, Cologne
  • A7 to/from Flensburg, Kiel
  • A7 to/from Hanover, Kassel
  • A23 to/from Heide.
  • A24 to/from Berlin.

There are free Park & Ride areas on the outskirts of the city center you can use to change to public transport. The metered parking system is also rather inexpensive.
